IEMT (Integral Eye Movement Technique)

When feelings and old patterns are hard to shift

Sometimes, we understand that a past experience is over, yet the feelings associated with it remain. We might find ourselves reacting strongly to particular situations, carrying emotions that seem out of proportion to the present, or repeating patterns that are difficult to explain.

Integral Eye Movement Technique (IEMT) is a structured therapeutic approach that uses guided eye movements and carefully chosen questions to explore emotional responses and patterns of identity. It offers a way to work with these experiences without needing to talk through every detail of what happened.

What would you like to change?

IEMT may be worth exploring if you find yourself:

  • Experiencing strong emotional reactions that are difficult to understand or manage.

  • Feeling that past experiences still affect you in the present.

  • Repeatedly responding to particular situations in ways you'd like to change.

  • Struggling with persistent feelings such as fear, shame, guilt or anger.

  • Holding on to a fixed view of yourself that limits what feels possible.

  • Finding that you know something intellectually, but still feel or react as though it were otherwise.

Everyone's experience is different, and no single approach is right for every person. We'll discuss what you'd like to change and whether IEMT seems appropriate for you.

Two ways of working

IEMT distinguishes between emotional responses and patterns of identity. These can be closely connected, but they are not quite the same.

Emotional responses - how did I learn to feel this way?

Sometimes a memory, situation or reminder triggers a familiar emotional or physical response, even when we don't consciously want it to. IEMT provides a structured way to work with these responses and notice how they change as we attend to the experience.

Patterns of identity - how did I learn to be this way?

There can be a difference between feeling anxious in a particular situation and seeing yourself as an anxious person. Over time, experiences can shape the stories we tell ourselves about who we are and what we're capable of. IEMT includes specific ways of exploring these patterns and how we experience ourselves.

What happens in an IEMT session?

We begin by talking about what has brought you to therapy and what you'd like to be different. Together, we'll identify a particular feeling, experience or recurring pattern to work with.

I'll guide you through specific eye movements while asking questions and helping you pay attention to changes in your experience. You don't need to force anything to happen or find the right answers. We'll work at a pace that feels manageable and keep checking how you're responding.

We'll review what has changed and decide together whether further IEMT work, another therapeutic approach or a different kind of support would be most helpful.

IEMT doesn't depend on analysing every detail of a difficult experience, and you remain in control of what you choose to share.

IEMT as part of your therapy

IEMT can be used as a focused approach in its own right, and some people find that a couple of sessions is enough to make a meaningful difference. It can also be combined successfully with other therapeutic approaches, including hypnotherapy and EFT, where that fits your needs.

At Hawthorn Practice, the work is shaped around you and what you'd like to achieve, rather than fitting you to a single technique.

IEMT is not a diagnostic tool or a guaranteed solution, and it isn't suitable for everyone. We'll discuss your circumstances and what is likely to be appropriate before deciding how to proceed.

IEMT sessions

1.5 hrs -  £75

You can book your appointment below. Once you've booked, I'll send you a client intake form to complete and return before your appointment. I'll also confirm whether you'd prefer to meet in person or online.

It's helpful to complete the form in advance so we can spend more of our session focusing on you and what you'd like to change, rather than working through practical details. If you haven't managed to complete it, don't worry - we can go through it together when we meet.
